Mobility Scooters: Driving away all the mobility woes of physically challenged people!
History: Allan R. Theime of Bridgeport, Michigan invented the first mobility scooter in the year 1968. His invention was inspired by his intention to help out a family member who was found to be suffering from multiple sclerosis. Right from model conceptualisation to final finished product (a front-wheel drive), he did everything at his home only. And from thereon, there was no looking back.
A mobility scooter is a vehicle that comes fitted with a wheelchair and shares a striking resemblance to motorscooter. The power-operated vehicle/scooter is the latest fad among people for short-distance locomotion. Available in electric version too, it is best suited for people struggling with mobility problems, aka specific forms of disability. Elaborating more on it, people lacking required arm/shoulder flexibility or stamina to use a manual wheelchair, can find a great friend in mobility scooters.
Unlike other conventional wheelchairs, a mobility scooter comes with a much comfortable seating arrangement. The user can easily adjust the seat according to his/her convenience, which is normally, not the case with foot supports of most wheelchairs. So, people with medical issues like arthritis, obesity etc. and are unable to stand, walk or sit in upright position can very well fit into it.
A blessing in disguise to physically-challenged people, a mobility scooter is a much reasonable option than power chairs, both cost-wise as well as social acceptance wise.
Structurally speaking, a mobility scooter comes fitted with a seat, located just above its two rear wheels. A handlebar is provided at the front side which is used for steering the two moving wheels. The vehicle also comes with ample leg-space.
Normal mobility scooters run on battery power. Hence, they are also provided with an onboard or separate charger unit. These scooters also come with an additional battery.
Incidentally, mobility scooters are available in two different versions. They are 1) Front-wheel drive 2) Rear-wheel drive.
The former (i.e., Front-wheel Drive) is a comparatively smaller vehicle and is best-suited for short distance(mainly indoors) travelling. The maximum weight capacity of this vehicle is 250 pounds.
On the other side, (i.e., Rear-wheel Drive) RD can can carry the maximum rider weight of 350 pounds. It can be used for both, indoors and outdoors travelling. Meanwhile, recently launched advanced versions of RD can even carry up to 500 pounds.
Despite offering multitude advantages, even a mobility scooter has its share of problems. Its longer length increases its turning radius. In addition to that, low ground clearance of the vehicle makes it impossible to traverse uneven pathways. Apart from that missing head and leg rests is another great disadvantage.
But despite all these odds, a mobility scooter has all the makings of being a perfect gift to physically-challenged people.
